Heteropoda davidbowie is one of the most recognizable proper spiders in the terrarium world. It is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it leads an arboreal lifestyle. The species has gained fame not only for its name, but especially for the spectacular coloration of adult specimens, in which bright shades of yellow and orange dominate, contrasting with black accents on the underside of the legs. The appearance and characteristics of this spider are typical of the Sparassidae (hunter spiders) family. It has a flattened body, which allows it to hide instantly in narrow crevices of the bark. Although the offered juveniles are small, they grow very quickly, reaching an impressive leg span. These spiders do not build hunting webs; they rely on their excellent eyesight and speed, which allows them to actively hunt insects. The behavior and venom of the species require a great deal of concentration on the part of the keeper. Heteropoda davidbowie is an extremely fast and agile spider, able to run on vertical and smooth surfaces (glass). It has no scorching hairs, but in a threatening situation it usually chooses instant escape. Venom is not considered dangerous to healthy humans, but due to the spider's temperament, handling in the terrarium should be kept to a minimum. Keeping conditions should reflect the tropical climate. A vertical terrarium with plenty of climbing elements, such as patches of cork oak bark, is essential. As a substrate, coconut fiber or peat with an admixture of moss will work best, which will help maintain humidity at about 75%. Excellent ventilation is very important, as stagnant air can be deadly for this species. Feed the juveniles with fruit flies or cricket hatchlings.
