Description
Heteroscodra maculata, also known as the Snowbird or Togo Starburst Baboon, is one of the most distinctive representatives of African fauna in terrariums. It is native to the tropical forests of West Africa, where it inhabits the hollows and bark folds of tall trees. Although as juveniles they may show a tendency to burrow into the ground, over time they become typical arboreal spiders.
Appearance and characteristics This spider is distinguished by its stocky body structure, particularly evident in its thickened hind leg pairs. Its coloration is a mixture of white, gray and black, forming a radial pattern ("starburst") on the carapace. Adult females reach about 6 cm in body length, which is very impressive with their massive stature.
Behavior and venom This is an Old World species, which means it lacks scabbing hairs, but instead has a very strong venom and a defensive nature. H. maculata is extremely fast and skittish; when threatened, it usually salutes by running away, but when pressed, it does not hesitate to attack. For this reason, it is recommended only for those with extensive experience with fast and aggressive spiders.
Breeding conditions For an adult individual, a vertical type terrarium of 20x20x40 cm will be optimal. As a substrate, coconut fiber with an admixture of peat works best, keeping the humidity at about 65-70%. An indispensable part of the decor is a cork tube placed vertically, as well as artificial or live plants that will allow the spider to build dense perches. The temperature should oscillate between 26-30°C.
