Lasiocyano sazimai is a species that has revolutionized the terrarium hobby with its amazing coloration. It is native to the high mountainous, rocky terrain of Brazil, making it an exceptionally hardy and graceful subject for breeding. As a juvenile, this spider is modestly colored, but with each successive moult it acquires a characteristic deep blue that looks almost unreal in adult specimens. Appearance and characteristics The main asset of this species is its metallic, dark blue color, which covers almost the entire body of the spider. On the abdomen there may be fine reddish hairs, creating an interesting contrast with the blue. Females grow larger and more massive than males, reaching about 6 cm in length of the body alone. This is a classic terrestrial spider with a stocky body, which, despite its beauty, does not require huge terrariums. Behavior and venom Lasiocyano sazimai is considered a species with a moderate temperament. It usually chooses to flee to a hiding place rather than attack, although like most New World birders, it has scabby hairs on its abdomen that it can comb out in a stressful situation. Its venom is weak and poses no threat to a healthy individual. Thanks to its predictability, it is often recommended to people who want to get started with colorful spiders. Breeding conditions In breeding, it requires a terrarium with a horizontal orientation. As a substrate, coconut fiber or peat several centimeters thick is ideal, which will allow the spider to possibly dig shallow burrows. It is important to maintain a temperature of 25-28°C and humidity of about 70-80%. Be sure to have a water bowl and provide adequate ventilation to prevent mold inside the tank.
