Description
Lasiodora parahybana - Parahyba's giant birdwing.
Origin: South America, mainly Brazil
Natural habitat: moist tropical forests, often near the ground - in burrows, under stones or roots.
-Appearance and size
One of the largest bird species in the world.
Body length: female about 9-10 cm, male about 6-7 cm.
Leg span: up to 25-28 cm.
Dark coloration, from black to dark brown, with a slight red or pink sheen of hairs.
-sexual dimorphism
Females are larger, bulkier and more long-lived (up to 15 years).
Males live shorter - usually 2-4 years after the last moult.
Males have longer legs and a slimmer body.
-Keeping conditions (terrarium)
Minimum terrarium dimensions: 40 × 30 × 30 cm for an adult individual.
Substrate: coconut peat, coconut fiber, soil without fertilizers - minimum 10 cm thick.
Humidity: about 70-80%.
Temperature: daily 25-28°C, at night 22-24°C.
Tank: should have a hiding place (such as a piece of bark) and a shallow bowl with water.
-Feeding
Young fed with small insects: flies, crickets, cockroaches.
Adults: crickets, cockroaches, whitefly larvae.
A voracious and fast-growing species.
- Behavior
Relatively peaceful, but can be defensive. When threatened, it brushes scabrous hairs from its abdomen or takes a defensive posture. Not venomous to humans (venom comparable to a bee sting), but can cause skin irritation. One of the most popular large varieties bred by terrarists.
