Liphistius jarujini is a fascinating representative of the suborder Mesothelae, which is considered one of the most primitive lineages of spiders still alive today. It is native to humid, forested areas of Thailand, where it leads a secretive, subterranean lifestyle. For the hobbyist, owning this species is an opportunity to interact with an evolutionary rarity that has retained features of its ancestors from millions of years ago, such as the distinct segmentation of the dorsal side of the abdomen. Appearance and characteristics This species is distinguished by its peculiar structure. Unlike most modern spiders, Liphistius jarujini has armored plates on the abdomen, which gives it a crude, prehistoric appearance. The coloration oscillates between dark browns, grays and blacks, which provides ideal camouflage. Although it does not reach an impressive size, its stocky build and strong legs adapted for digging impress any observer. Behavior and venom It is a typical trapdoor spider. It builds vertical burrows lined with web, which it closes with a lid made of soil and moss. Around the entrance it constructs a system of signal threads that inform it of approaching prey. This spider is lightning-fast when hunting, but outside of the moment of attack it rarely leaves its shelter. Venom is not considered dangerous to humans, but due to its speed and specific requirements, this species is recommended for those with experience. Breeding conditions Breeding requires a specific approach. A terrarium or container with a very thick layer of substrate (at least 10-15 cm) is necessary, which must be constantly moist, but not waterlogged. A mixture of peat, clay and sand works best to maintain the structure of the burrow. The temperature should be moderate, preferably between 22-25°C. High humidity is key, as well as ensuring peace and quiet, as these spiders are sensitive to strong shocks.
