Description
Appearance and characteristics Phormictopus atrichomatus, also known as Red Island Birdeater, is one of the largest and most massive members of the genus. This birdeater is native to the Dominican Republic and grows to an impressive size, reaching up to 20 cm in leg span. As a juvenile, it has subdued coloration, but with each moult it acquires colors characteristic of the species - dominated by shades of deep brown, gray and subtle pink-red sheen on the carapace and legs. Its powerful build and wide legs make the adult specimen look extremely majestic.
Behavior and venom In terms of temperament, it is a confident, dynamic and often defensive spider. It is not a recommended species for hand-holding; in stressful situations it usually chooses to flee or assume a threatening posture. Like other New World avian spiders, it has scabbing hairs on its abdomen, which it can brush toward an intruder. The spider's venom is not dangerous to a healthy person, but due to the spider's size and strength, the bite can be painful. The species is known for its incredible appetite - attacks on feeders are violent and spectacular.
Breeding conditions Breeding this species requires a spacious terrarium with a horizontal orientation. As a substrate, a thick layer of coconut fiber or a mixture of peat and sand works best, which will allow the spider to dig occasionally. Keep the temperature between 25-28°C and humidity at 70-80%. It is important to provide adequate ventilation and constant access to a bowl of water. Phormictopus atrichomatus is a very hardy spider, which, when provided with optimal conditions, grows in sight, becoming the main attraction of the terrarium.
