Description
Aspinochilus rufus is an exceptionally striking representative of Asian fauna, inhabiting the tropical forests of Indonesia in the wild. Among hobbyists, it has earned the nickname “Peach Earth Tiger” due to its unique coloration, which combines warm shades of orange and rust with the pattern on the abdomen characteristic of this group.
Appearance and Characteristics: These spiders gain more intense color with each molt. Ultimately, this species reaches impressive sizes, growing to a leg span of 15–18 cm. Its silhouette is slender and typical of arboreal spiders, and its dense, peach-colored hair makes it one of the most photogenic Old World tarantulas.
Behavior and Venom: Like most Asian tarantulas, Aspinochilus rufus is characterized by great speed and a defensive disposition. It lacks stinging hairs, so it defends itself by fleeing or adopting a threatening posture. It possesses potent venom, which is why it is recommended only for experienced keepers who can safely handle dynamic arboreal species.
Housing requirements: It requires a vertically oriented terrarium that provides adequate space for climbing. It is essential to maintain high humidity (approx. 80%) and a temperature between 25–28°C. A mixture of peat and moss, which retains moisture well, works best as a substrate. Ensure proper ventilation to provide the spider with optimal living conditions.
