Cyriocosmus sp. Oro Negro (0.5 cm)

Appearance and Characteristics Cyriocosmus sp. Oro Negro is a rare treasure in the world of terrarium keeping. This miniature dwarf tarantula stands out from its cousins due to its distinctive coloration, which perfectly reflects its name (“Black Gold”). As seen in the photo, this spider has velvety, deep-black legs and a carapace that shimmers with a subtle, dark sheen. The most eye-catching feature, however, is the abdomen, adorned with a distinctive, bright pattern in the shape of an orange-and-gold heart—typical of the genus Cyriocosmus—which contrasts sharply with the rest of its dark body. The baby spiders offered (0.5 cm) are extremely voracious and gain weight quickly. Behavior and Venom This species is considered gentle and calm, making it an ideal candidate for a first spider, especially for enthusiasts of smaller species. These spiders are very hardworking—although they are ground-dwelling, they eagerly dig burrows and line their surroundings with dense webs, creating intricate structures. They rarely show aggression; when threatened, they prefer to flee. They have stinging hairs, but due to their miniature size, their effect on the keeper is negligible. Their venom is weak, comparable to a bee sting. Housing Conditions: Keeping C. sp. Oro Negro is straightforward and does not require much space. This spider needs a moist substrate (peat, coconut fiber) and a temperature range of 24–28°C. Due to its small size, the juvenile can spend its first few months in a small container (e.g., a sauceboat), which makes it easier to feed it on newly hatched crickets or fruit flies. Eventually, a nano-terrarium measuring approximately 15x15x15 cm will suffice.
