Description

Ephebopus murinus, known as the skeleton tarantula, is a medium-sized spider of the Theraphosidaeto family, native to the northern part of South America, including Brazil, French Guiana and Suriname. It is characterized by its dark brown abdomen, golden carapace and black legs with distinct, light-colored bone-like stripes, giving it a "skeletal" appearance. Adult females reach a body length of 5-6 cm and a leg span of up to 13-15 cm. This spider leads an aboveground lifestyle, digging deep burrows in moist lowland forests. It is known for its fast movements and aggressive behavior; in threatening situations it adopts a defensive posture, raising its front legs and presenting venom fangs. A unique feature of this species is the scabbing hairs located on the forelegs (pedipalps), which distinguishes it from most birdworms, in which they are located on the abdomen. Due to its temperament and specific breeding requirements, Ephebopus murinus is recommended rather to experienced breeders.
