Description
Ami sp. Panama is an exceptional representative of the so-called "dwarf tarantulas" (dwarf birds). Even as an adult, this spider reaches a small size, usually not exceeding 3-4 cm in body length. Offered juveniles of 1 cm (legspan) have a uniform dark coloration, which gains depth with growth, with subtle bright rings on the joints of the legs. Unlike some other members of the genus, this species does not have a pattern on the abdomen or rusty hairs.
In terms of behavior, Ami sp. Panama is a typically skittish spider. When alarmed or sensing vibrations, juveniles usually save themselves by escaping into their burrow or under prepared shelter. It is not an aggressive or excessively fast spider, which facilitates safe handling and feeding, although due to its small size it requires concentration during cleanup work. The venom of this species is considered weak.
Breeding conditions should reflect the tropical climate of Panama. The recommended temperature is 24-27°C with high substrate humidity (about 75-80%). As a ground spider with a tendency to dig, Ami sp. Panama feels best on moist substrate, in which it can create small tunnels. For an individual of 1 cm in size, small breeding containers (clothespin or sauropod type) will be ideal, making it easier for the spider to hunt small prey such as fruit flies or cut up whitefly larvae.
