Description
The appearance and characteristics of Brachypelma hamorii, or the classic Mexican Red Knee, is a bird of extraordinary beauty. The offered female, 6 cm in size, already presents a fully developed, contrasting pattern: the deep black of the abdomen and carapace juxtaposed with bright orange-red rings on the knees. As a subadult, it is a very stable and massive spider. Females of this species are famous for their extreme longevity, able to live up to 20-30 years in breeding, making them companions for decades.
Behavior and venom This bird is characterized by an extremely calm temperament. It moves slowly and predictably, making any terrarium work stress-free. It is a defensive species only to the extent of scorching hairs - it rarely displays aggression. It has a very weak venom, with a strength comparable to that of a bee, making it recommended for those looking for a safe yet spectacular spider.
Breeding conditions In the wild, it inhabits the dry regions of Mexico, so in a terrarium it requires low humidity and good ventilation. It prefers dry substrate with access to a bowl of water. The optimal temperature is 25-28°C. As an aboveground spider, it requires a horizontal tank with a layer of substrate for digging and shelter in the form of cork bark. This is an outstandingly hardy species that does well in domestic conditions.
