Description
Caribena versicolor, more widely known as Martinique Pinktoe, is an absolute classic in the terrarium world. This species is native to the Caribbean island of Martinique, where it inhabits tree crowns and crevices in the bark. Its developmental cycle is visually fascinating - the 1.5-cm-long babies are bright blue, which, combined with their fluffy appearance, makes them one of the most popular spiders.
Behavior and venom: This species is considered gentle and ideal for beginners. C. versicolor rarely shows aggression, and in a threatening situation it usually rescues itself with a quick escape or by shooting its droppings at its attacker. It has a weak venom, comparable to a bee sting. It does not have the scabbing hairs on its abdomen typical of many other species (although technically a member of the Aviculariinae, its defense mechanisms are of little concern to humans).
Breeding conditions: As an arboreal spider, it requires a terrarium with a vertical orientation. A key element in breeding this species is very good ventilation (preferably of the cross-ventilation type), as stagnant, humid air is deadly to them. The substrate should be kept slightly moist at all times, and the terrarium should not lack climbing elements, such as pieces of cork tube and artificial plants on which the spider will build its dense white nest.
