Description
Appearance and Characteristics: Eresus sandaliatus is a species with exceptional sexual dimorphism. Females are larger, more robust, and almost entirely black, giving them a velvety appearance. Males, on the other hand, upon reaching maturity, develop striking coloration—their abdomen turns an intense red with characteristic black spots, which serves as a warning coloration. The specimens offered are 0.5 cm long and are in a phase of rapid growth, requiring patience on the part of the breeder.
Behavior and Venom Jumping spiders are calm by nature, though they can be very strong and determined when hunting. They build distinctive burrows in the ground, which they line with a dense, white web forming a sort of “tube”. These are long-lived spiders with a relatively slow metabolism. Their venom is stronger than that of most New World tarantulas and can cause painful swelling and flu-like symptoms; therefore, caution should be exercised during cleaning.
Housing Conditions: Breeding Eresus sandaliatus requires a specific approach. Provide them with a tall container containing a thick layer of substrate (a mixture of sand, clay, and peat) that will allow them to dig burrows. This species prefers drier conditions—the substrate should be nearly dry, and humidity should be maintained only by lightly misting one wall once a week. The optimal temperature range is 22–26°C. It is very important to ensure good ventilation.
