Description
Heterometrus silenus is one of the most recognizable and valued scorpions in the global terrarium hobby. It is native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it lives in burrows under tree roots or rocks. This species is recommended for beginner hobbyists, as it is highly resilient to breeding mistakes and has a calm temperament. Adult specimens look exceptionally majestic thanks to the deep black color of their carapace, which exhibits strong fluorescence under UV light.
Appearance and Characteristics: The build of Heterometrus silenus attests to its power. It possesses very wide, massive, and heavily armed claws (chelae), which serve as its primary tools for hunting and defense. Its body is stocky and heavily armored. Unlike smaller scorpion species, this forest giant relies on its physical strength rather than the toxicity of its venom. Adult specimens are characterized by a shiny, smooth carapace with a velvety sheen.
Behavior and Venom: This species is widely considered safe and docile. These scorpions very rarely resort to using their venomous stinger; their first line of defense is their powerful pincers and an attempt to flee into their burrow. The potency of their venom is comparable to that of a bee sting, making them easy to handle even for less experienced keepers. They are calm by nature, preferring a nocturnal lifestyle and patiently waiting for prey.
Housing conditions: Success in keeping this tropical species depends on maintaining high humidity. It requires a horizontal terrarium with a thick layer of substrate, which allows it to satisfy its natural instinct to dig tunnels. A moist mixture of peat and coconut fiber works best as a substrate. The optimal temperature should range between 25–28°C. The enclosure should contain numerous hiding spots (e.g., made of cork oak bark) and a shallow dish of water, which helps maintain air humidity.
