Appearance and Distinctive Features This species has a classic, stocky build typical of ground-dwelling spiders. Its dominant coloration consists of deep browns and black, which, under the right lighting, can reveal a delicate, metallic sheen on the carapace. Unlike many other South American spiders, its abdomen is uniform in color, dark, and velvety in texture. Its proportionally short and sturdy legs enable it to move efficiently across the ground. Behavior and Venom Homoeomma orellanai is known for its exceptionally phlegmatic and calm disposition. It is a spider that very rarely displays defensive behavior. Importantly for many keepers, this species does not tend to shed its stinging hairs from the abdomen, making terrarium maintenance very comfortable and free from the risk of irritation. Its venom is weak, and its primary response to stress is usually to freeze in place or slowly retreat to a hiding spot. Housing Requirements Keeping this Chilean tarantula is straightforward. As a ground-dwelling spider, it requires a terrarium or horizontal enclosure. The best substrate is coconut fiber mixed with peat or a small amount of sand, which helps maintain an appropriate microclimate. This species prefers moderate temperatures (22–26°C) and does not require very high humidity—it is sufficient to maintain a slightly moist area around the water dish. It’s a good idea to place a piece of oak or cork bark in the terrarium, which will serve as a safe hiding place for the spider.
