Description
Appearance and Characteristics Lasiodora klugi, also known as the red-haired tarantula, is a true giant among arachnids. It originates from the dry regions of eastern Brazil (Bahia), which makes it a species relatively tolerant of minor breeding errors. It is one of the most popular species among those who wish to include in their collection a spider that reaches monumental sizes in a short time. The name “Bahia Scarlet” comes directly from the characteristic, long, and bright red hairs that densely cover the abdomen of adult specimens.
Behavior and Venom The red-haired tarantula is famous for its exceptionally large appetite. It is a very active spider that does not spend the entire day in hiding but often displays itself on the surface. Although it is not considered an aggressive species, it can be quick-tempered and defensive. When stressed, it most often chooses to shed the stinging hairs from its abdomen, which can cause irritation to the skin and respiratory tract. Its venom is weak and poses no threat to the health of a healthy human.
Housing Requirements: Due to its adult size, this species requires a spacious above-ground terrarium. The best substrate is coconut fiber or a mixture of peat moss and sand, which helps maintain adequate humidity. The optimal daytime temperature should range between 25–28°C, with a slight drop at night. Humidity should be maintained at approximately 75%. It is advisable to provide the spider with a sturdy hiding place, such as a piece of oak bark.
