Lasiodora parahybana, more widely known as the giant bird, is a true legend in the terrarium world. It is naturally found in the dry, steppe regions of eastern Brazil. It is one of the most popular species for both novices and experienced breeders, due to its monumental size and exceptional resistance to breeding errors. The offered pair are individuals of considerable size, allowing you to enjoy their potency without a long wait for growth. Appearance and characteristics This species is distinguished by its massive body structure and dark, almost black coloration, which becomes more subdued with age. The entire body is covered with numerous hairs, the longest of which on the legs and abdomen have a characteristic salmon or pinkish hue. As terrestrial spiders, they have thick and strong legs, making it easy for them to move efficiently and hunt sizable prey. Adult females can reach leg spans of more than 25 cm. Behavior and venom The giant bird spider is known for its extremely large appetite and aggressive darting for food. It is a very active spider that often stays on the surface of the terrarium, exposing its qualities. Although it is not considered an aggressive species towards humans, it is sometimes impulsive and defensive. In a stressful situation, it usually chooses to brush the scabbing hairs from its abdomen, which can cause severe irritation. Its venom is weak and poses no threat to the health of a healthy person. Breeding conditions Due to their target size, these individuals require spacious above-ground terrariums (separately for the male and female). As a substrate, coconut fiber or peat several centimeters thick works best. The optimal daytime temperature should oscillate between 25-28°C, while the humidity should be kept at about 75%. It is necessary to bowl with water and ensure proper ventilation inside the tank, which prevents the formation of mold.
