The appearance and characteristics of Nhandu chromatus, known as the Brazilian Red and White bird, is a true icon of South American terrariums. This species is distinguished by its extremely elegant coloration: it has a light gray, almost silvery carapace with a darker accent around the eyes. Its legs are deep black, decorated with distinct longitudinal white stripes that give it a unique appearance. The whole is complemented by a massive abdomen covered with dense, intense rust-red hairs. The offered pair are individuals of considerable size, in which these features are already fully exposed. Behavior and venom This bird is valued for its huge appetite and high activity in the terrarium. Although it has a weak venom and is recommended for beginners, it can be impulsive and defensive. Nhandu chromatus' main line of defense is to actively comb the scabbing hairs from its abdomen, which can cause skin irritation. It rarely displays direct aggression, but its speed and confidence when hunting make it extremely spectacular. As a terrestrial spider, it readily displays its charms, rarely spending time in hiding. Breeding conditions Breeding this species is not very difficult. As an inhabitant of Brazilian forests and savannas, it requires a temperature in the range of 25-28°C and humidity of 75-80%. Due to its terrestrial lifestyle, it is crucial to provide a terrarium with a large bottom area, filled with a layer of moist substrate (such as coconut fiber) several centimeters thick. Ensure good ventilation and access to a water bowl. A pair of Nhandu chromatus at this stage is an excellent opportunity for breeders wishing to observe interactions during release.
