Description
Sericopelma angustum is a less common in collections, but an extremely attractive representative of Central American fauna. This bird grows to a sizable size, which, combined with its massive stature, makes it an ornament of any tank. It is dominated by shades of deep brown and black, often with a delicate reddish sheen on the hairs of the abdomen.
Behavior and venom: This species exhibits the typical temperament of the genus Sericopelma. It is not considered extremely aggressive, but is sometimes impulsive and can take a defensive posture. Its main line of defense is to brush the scabbing hairs from its abdomen, which can irritate the skin and respiratory tract. It has a weak venom, comparable to a bee sting, making it a safe choice for those with basic experience in the hobby.
Breeding conditions: As a terrestrial spider, it requires a terrarium with a large bottom area (minimum 30x30x20 cm for an adult). A thick layer of moist substrate (such as coconut fiber with an admixture of peat) is a key element, as representatives of this species like to dig shallow burrows. It is necessary to provide constant access to a bowl of water and keep the humidity high at about 80%. The diet should consist of live insects matched to the size of the spider.
