Acanthoscurria geniculata, more widely known as the white collared bird, is an absolute classic in the terrarium world. The offered 6.5 cm female is a well-established specimen that impresses with its distinctive white stripes on the leg joints, contrasting with the deep black of the carapace and the red hairs on the abdomen. This species is native to the humid forests of Brazil and grows to an impressive size, reaching up to 20 cm leg span. Appearance and characteristics: this spider is prized for its massive appearance. Even at 6.5 cm in size (legspan), its powerful build is evident. The white rings on the legs are very distinct, making it one of the most photogenic species for breeding. Behavior and venom: A. geniculata is known for its phenomenal appetite. It attacks almost any prey that appears within its sight. Although its venom is considered weak and safe for humans, the spider can sometimes be defensive. Instead of fleeing, it readily brushes the scalding hairs from its abdomen or adopts a warning posture. It is not an aggressive species in the sense of seeking confrontation, but its impulsiveness when feeding requires the attention of the keeper. Breeding conditions: for an adult female, a terrarium of at least 30x30x25 cm will be ideal. As a substrate, coconut fiber or peat will work best, kept at a constant humidity of about 75%. Room temperature (24-26°C) is sufficient, although the spider shows more activity at 28°C. A bowl of water and a hiding place, such as a cork tube, should be provided.
