Description
Amazonius burgessi (formerly classified as Pseudoclamoris burgessi) is a fascinating representative of arboreal birds native to the humid forests of Colombia. This species is very popular among hobbyists because of its unique appearance - young specimens have a distinct, contrasting pattern on the opisthosoma, which over time changes to subtler, olive-brown hues with a metallic sheen on the carapace.
In terms of behavior, Amazonius burgessi is a typical arboreal spider: very fast and agile. It does not have a strong venom and does not comb out its scabbing hairs, but in a threatening situation it prefers a lightning-fast escape. It is a species with a large appetite, characterized by a very fast growth rate, which makes watching its development plenty rewarding.
Breeding conditions should reflect the tropical climate. The spider requires a vertical terrarium with plenty of climbing elements, such as cork tubes or artificial plants. It is crucial to maintain high humidity (about 75%) with very good ventilation to prevent mold. Coconut fiber with an admixture of peat moss works best as a substrate.
