Description
Aphonopelma crinirufum is a species that deservedly enjoys a reputation as one of the most desirable Mexican birds (the genus Aphonopelma is widely distributed in North and Central America). The offered female is a growth stage individual that will color more and more intensely with each stage of life. Although not yet fully mature, the overview photo shows the target appearance of adult females, in which the deep black of the body contrasts with dense, rusty or reddish hairs, giving the spider a velvety yet predatory appearance.
In terms of behavior, Aphonopelma crinirufum is an uncommonly gentle and slow spider. It's a species that almost never shows aggression and rarely sheds scabbing hairs. Its venom is weak, making it relatively safe, and its calm disposition makes it an ideal choice even for those starting out in terrarium hobby, as long as the keeper shows patience (the species grows very slowly).
Breeding conditions are typical for species from arid and semi-arid areas. These spiders prefer a temperature in the range of 25-28°C. Humidity should be kept relatively low (65-75%), with the provision of a dry substrate and a bowl of water. As a terrestrial spider, it requires a terrarium with a large bottom area with a layer of substrate that will allow it to dig if necessary. Buying a sub-adult female is an excellent investment for hobbyists who value rare and peaceful species that are rarely seen in the trade.
