Description
Avicularia avicularia, commonly known as "Pinktoe," is one of the most iconic species in the world's terrarium hobby. It is native to the humid rainforests of South America, where it leads an arboreal lifestyle, building elaborate nests of dense webbing, often in coiled leaves or tree hollows.
Appearance and characteristics: This species is distinguished by its extremely attractive appearance. Adult individuals have a dark, almost dark blue body with a metallic sheen, which contrasts with the bright pink-orange tips of the feet. Young spiders undergo a fascinating coloration change - at first their legs are bright, and with each subsequent moult they take on target dark colors.
Behavior and venom: Avicularia avicularia is known for its very gentle disposition. It is a spider that rarely displays any defensiveness, choosing escape as its main form of defense. It has a weak venom that poses no threat to a healthy person. However, it should be remembered that they are very agile and jumping spiders, which requires concentration when feeding or working in the terrarium.
Breeding conditions: The key to successful breeding of this species is to ensure high humidity with excellent ventilation. A vertical-type terrarium should have numerous vents to prevent air stagnation. Cork tubes and vegetation work best as decor, which will allow the spider to create a safe haven.
