Description
Heterometrus silenus is one of the most recognizable scorpions in the world's terrarium hobby, inhabiting the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is a recommended species for beginner hobbyists, as it has a high tolerance for minor breeding mistakes and rarely exhibits defensive behavior. These scorpions reach an impressive size, and their carapace is characterized by a deep black color, which under UV light shows an amazing fluorescence.
Appearance and characteristics: The structure of Heterometrus silenus testifies to its strength - it has very wide and powerful pincers (chelae), which are its main hunting and defensive tool. The body is spindly, and the abdomen ends in a telson with a venom spike. Unlike smaller and slimmer scorpions, this forest giant relies on physical strength rather than venom toxicity. Also distinctive is its shiny, smooth carapace, which looks extremely majestic in adult specimens.
Behavior and venom: This species is widely regarded as safe and gentle. These scorpions very rarely choose to use a venom spike, and the strength of their venom is comparable to a bee sting. Instead of attacking, they usually choose to flee into a burrow or try to scare off an opponent with their spread pincers. They are animals with a calm temperament, which makes them one of the most popular arachnids to observe in home terrariums.
Breeding conditions: Ensuring an appropriate microclimate is crucial to the health of this tropical species. It requires a horizontally oriented terrarium with a thick layer of moist substrate, which allows it to dig burrows and maintain adequate humidity. The optimal temperature should oscillate between 25-28°C. Inside the tank, there should be numerous hiding places, for example, made of cork oak bark, and a shallow water dish that will allow the animal to drink and help maintain humidity.
