Heterothele gabonensis, also known as the Gabonese bird spider, is a small member of the Theraphosidae family native to the humid tropical forests of Gabon. It is a spider included in the group of dwarf bird spiders, which makes it an ideal choice for those with limited space, yet looking for an active and showy species to observe. Appearance and characteristics Despite its small size, this spider is eye-catching in its coloration. Shades of brown, gray and black predominate, and the abdomen shows a distinctive "herringbone" pattern. The carapace often shimmers with a metallic sheen. This species grows relatively fast, but due to its nature, even adult females rarely exceed 3-3.5 cm in length of the body alone. Behavior and venom The Gaboon bird is an Old World spider, which means it has no scabbing hairs. Its main line of defense is its incredible speed and escape to the nest. Although it has a venom more potent than New World spiders, it is not considered an aggressive species toward its keeper unless pressed. It is famous for being an "architect" - it can cover almost the entire interior of a container with a dense white web in a short period of time, creating an intricate system of tunnels. Breeding conditions Due to its size, a 15x15x15 cm terrarium or a larger braplast container is sufficient for an adult individual. It is crucial to ensure adequate humidity of about 70-75% by regularly sprinkling part of the substrate. As a base, it is worth using coconut fiber with an admixture of peat moss. Room temperature of 24-27°C is optimal for its proper development. It is worth adding small elements to the decor, such as pieces of bark or twigs, which will serve as anchor points for its impressive nets.
