Nhandu chromatus Male (7.5cm)

Appearance and characteristics Nhandu chromatus, more widely known as the white-bellied bird, is a real gem in any terrarium hobbyist's collection. This species is native to the dry forests of Brazil and grows to an impressive size (up to 8-9 cm in length of the body alone). Its appearance is eye-catching: the carapace is bright, almost white, the abdomen is covered with dense red hairs, and the black legs show distinct white stripes. Thanks to this color combination, this spider is perfectly visible against the background of the substrate in the terrarium. Behavior and venom In terms of temperament, it is a moderately active species. Although it does not have a strong venom and is considered safe for human health, it can be quite skittish and defensive. In stressful situations, it usually chooses to flee or comb the scabbing hairs from its abdomen, which can cause itchy skin on the caregiver. It is not an aggressive spider, but its speed and reactivity make it advisable to be cautious when cleaning. Breeding conditions Breeding Nhandu chromatus is not complicated. As a terrestrial spider, it requires a terrarium with a horizontal orientation. The optimal substrate is coconut fiber or peat mixture, which should be slightly moist at all times (humidity at about 75%). It is important to ensure an appropriate temperature of 24-28°C, which promotes regular moulting and healthy growth. This species readily accepts any type of food adapted to its size.
