Description
Phormingochilus sp. sabah blue is the dream of many arboreal bird keepers. This species is native to the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, where it inhabits tree hollows and dense rainforest canopies. What distinguishes this spider from other representatives of the Ornithoctoninae is the amazing metallic blue coloration of the legs and carapace, which becomes more intense with each successive moulting.
The behavior and temperament of this species are typical of Old World spiders. It is extremely fast, impulsive and defensive. Phormingochilus sp. sabah blue has no scabbing hairs, so it relies on its speed or attack in a threatening situation. It has a strong venom, which, combined with its dynamism, makes it a species for those with experience in breeding impulsive arboreal birds only.
Breeding conditions must take into account the high humidity and temperature found in the tropics. For an individual of 2.5 cm (legspan), a tall container with adequate ventilation will be ideal. Use moist peat or coconut fiber as substrate. It is necessary to place a vertical piece of bark or a cork tube in the terrarium, which will serve as a foundation for a dense, tubular perch. This spider is very voracious and grows quickly if you provide it with optimal conditions: a temperature of about 26°C and high humidity (about 80%).
