Description
Brachypelma auratum, known as the Mexican Flame Knee, is one of the most sought-after species in the terrarium hobby. It differs from its close relative, B. hamorii, in its more contrasting coloration and a distinctive, almost geometric pattern on the knees that resembles a flame. The rest of the spider’s body is deep black, which makes the colorful accents on its legs even more striking. The pair offered here consists of adults in an advanced growth stage, making them excellent candidates for further breeding. This species is characterized by very slow growth but incredible longevity.
Behavior and Venom This species is known for its exceptionally calm temperament. It is a slow and predictable tarantula, making it an ideal choice even for those just starting their journey with larger specimens. As a defense mechanism, it usually chooses to flee or to release stinging hairs from its abdomen. It has a weak venom, comparable to that of a bee, making it safe for home display and easy to care for on a daily basis.
Housing Conditions In the wild, these spiders inhabit the dry, rocky regions of Mexico. In captivity, they require a horizontal terrarium with a thick layer of dry substrate (e.g., a mixture of peat and sand), which will allow them to dig shallow burrows if necessary. The optimal temperature is 25–28°C, and humidity should range around 55–60%. This species is already very resilient to environmental conditions and readily accepts a variety of foods, from crickets to cockroaches.
