Acanthoscurria geniculata (1.5 cm) – White-kneed tarantula

Acanthoscurria geniculata, more commonly known as the white-kneed tarantula, is an absolute classic in the world of terrarium keeping. This juvenile specimen captivates with its distinctive white stripes on the joints of its legs, which contrast perfectly with the deep black of its carapace and the red hairs on its abdomen. This species is native to the humid forests of Brazil and grows to impressive sizes, making it one of the largest terrestrial tarantula species. Appearance and Distinctive Features: This spider is highly prized for its massive appearance. Even in its juvenile stages, its powerful build is clearly visible, becoming increasingly impressive with each molt. The white rings on its knees are very distinct, making it one of the most photogenic species available to hobbyists. Behavior and venom: A. geniculata is famous for its phenomenal appetite. It attacks nearly any prey that comes within its reach, making feeding a truly spectacular show. Although its venom is considered weak and safe for humans, the spider can be defensive. Instead of fleeing, it readily bristles its stinging hairs on its abdomen or assumes a warning posture. It is not an aggressive species in the sense of seeking confrontation, but its impulsiveness during feeding requires the keeper’s attention. Housing conditions: A terrarium sized appropriately for the spider’s current size is ideal for this species (for mature specimens, at least 30x30x25 cm). Coconut fiber or peat moss works best as substrate, kept at a constant humidity of about 75%. Room temperature (24–26°C) is perfectly adequate, though the spider is more active when the temperature is slightly raised to 28°C. Provide a water dish and a hiding spot, such as a cork tube.
