Description

Amazonius germani – why is this tarantula worth having? Amazonius germani (a species very well known to older breeders under the historical names Pseudoclamoris gigas or Tapinauchenius gigas) is an absolutely phenomenal arboreal tarantula. First and foremost, this species attracts attention with its incredible color transformation throughout its life and the complete absence of stinging hairs on its abdomen. Furthermore, this spider has very weak venom that poses no threat to humans. This is because its primary line of defense is not an attack, but a lightning-fast retreat to its nest. However, it can be incredibly fast and agile. For this reason, it is recommended primarily for intermediate keepers or very ambitious beginners who want to try their hand at keeping faster arachnids. Where does Amazonius germani occur in the wild? This beautiful and agile spider is native to the humid, tropical forests of South America, primarily in French Guiana and Brazil. Furthermore, in its natural habitat, it leads a strictly arboreal lifestyle. It is usually found in bark crevices, on tall trees (often citrus trees), and in natural tree hollows. Consequently, it builds intricate, asymmetrical nests out of spider silk there, where it spends most of the day, becoming active mainly under the cover of night. What terrarium conditions does Amazonius germani require? Terrarium and Setup Due to its arboreal lifestyle, an adult specimen requires a vertically oriented enclosure. For this reason, the ideal terrarium for a tarantula should measure approximately 20x20x30 cm or 20x20x35 cm. In addition, simply cover the bottom with a thin layer of substrate (about 3–4 cm)—moisture-absorbing coconut peat works perfectly here. It’s especially a good idea to place vertical cork tubes and branches inside, which will serve as a sturdy base for building a nest. As for additional decorative elements, it’s a good idea to add artificial or live plants. This will help the spider feel safer and more likely to show itself. Temperature, Humidity, and Ventilation This spider’s climate requirements are typical for species from Guyana. Therefore, the optimal daytime temperature should be 25–28°C, while natural drops to around 22°C are recommended at night. Equally important, humidity should be maintained at 75–80% through regular misting. Keep in mind, however, that this species is very sensitive to stuffiness and overheating. Therefore, ensuring excellent cross-ventilation is absolutely essential for success. As a result, you’ll protect your pet from molting problems and mold growth. Size and Feeding of Juveniles in the L2 and L3 Stages It’s worth knowing that Amazonius germani grows very quickly and is known for its enormous appetite. We currently offer healthy, well-fed juveniles in the L2 and L3 stages. Large terrariums are still completely unsuitable for these little spiders. This means that small rearing containers (e.g., film canisters or small urine boxes) are ideal for them, as they can easily locate their prey inside. It’s worth noting that at these stages, the little ones look absolutely amazing—they have black bodies, tiger stripes on their abdomens, and reddish legs with black “socks”! When it comes to feeding, we provide them with feeder insects appropriate for their size. For example, the ideal feeder insects for L2–L3 spiders are small Turkish or Argentine cockroach hatchlings, fed twice a week. On the other hand, adults will have no trouble hunting large crickets and grasshoppers. Sexual Dimorphism Noticeable differences in appearance only become apparent over time. First and foremost, adult females develop a beautiful reddish-brown coloration; they tend to be stocky and live relatively long lives (up to 10–12 years). Meanwhile, adult males undergo a visual metamorphosis. Specifically, after their final molt, they lose their intense colors, becoming uniformly gray or tinged with purple. Additionally, they are disproportionately slender, have hooks on their shins, and possess copulatory organs (bulbi). Unfortunately, their lifespan as adults is only a few months.
