Description
Brachypelma boehmei, known as the Mexican Fireleg, is a true icon of the terrarium hobby. This species is distinguished by the exceptionally vivid, almost garish coloration of its legs, which contrast with its dark abdomen and light carapace. With each molt, young specimens become increasingly colorful until they reach their full, fiery brilliance. This is a long-lived spider that can accompany its owner for over a dozen years, and even several decades in the case of females.
Behavior and Venom This tarantula is famous for its calm disposition. It moves slowly and is very predictable, making it a safe choice for those just starting out in the hobby. Its primary defense mechanism is brushing stinging hairs from its abdomen, which it does more readily than other species in this genus; therefore, caution is advised when working inside the terrarium. Its venom is weak, comparable to that of a bee, making it a safe species for humans.
Housing Conditions In the wild, it inhabits dry regions of Mexico, so in a terrarium it prefers low-humidity conditions. Dry peat or coconut fiber is best used as substrate. It requires a horizontal terrarium with access to a water dish and a hiding spot, such as a piece of cork oak bark. The optimal temperature is 25–28°C, which supports the spider’s proper metabolism and growth.
