Description

Megaphobema robustum, also known as the Colombian red-legged bird spider, is one of the most desirable species from South America. The appearance and characteristics of this spider make it difficult to confuse it with any other species. It has a deep black velvety carapace and abdomen, which create an amazing contrast with its intensely orange or rust-colored legs. The spider's silhouette is proportional, and its colors become extremely saturated just after moulting. Behavior and venom: This species has a relatively weak venom, but makes up for it with its dynamic nature. It is not considered aggressive, but can sometimes be very skittish and defensive. When threatened, it can run very fast or present a peculiar defensive dance, rapidly rotating around its axis. Like most New World birds, when stressed it can actively comb the scabbing hairs from its abdomen, which is a warning signal to an intruder. Breeding conditions: Success in caring for this species depends on maintaining stable conditions. The temperature should oscillate between 22-25°C - this species prefers slightly cooler conditions than birds of the desert regions and is bad at tolerating overheating. Humidity must be high, at about 80%. A thick layer of substrate should be provided in the terrarium, as these spiders love to dig and often build extensive burrows in which they spend the day.
