Description
Thrixopelma pruriens is a species that has enjoyed unwavering popularity among spider keepers for years, especially those taking their first steps in terrarium keeping. It is native to the dry and semi-arid regions of Peru, which makes it highly resilient to minor breeding errors. It is a ground-dwelling spider with a moderate growth rate, reaching a substantial size that allows for comfortable observation of its fascinating behaviors.
Appearance and Distinctive Features: The main appeal of this species is its elegance. Its body is covered with dense, dark hairs that have a velvety texture. Most striking, however, is the metallic, greenish or coppery sheen on the carapace, which becomes particularly visible after a fresh molt. The abdomen is adorned with longer, reddish bristles, giving the spider a unique character.
Behavior and Venom: Thrixopelma pruriens is known for its very calm temperament. It is a slow-moving spider that rarely displays defensive behavior, preferring instead to retreat quietly to its hiding place. However, it is important to remember that, like most New World spiders, it has stinging hairs on its abdomen, which it may release when stressed. Its venom is weak and poses no threat to human health, making it one of the safest choices for home keeping.
Housing requirements: It requires a horizontal terrarium with a thick layer of substrate (e.g., coconut fiber mixed with peat moss) that allows it to dig if necessary. This species prefers moderate humidity and room temperature ranging from 24–26°C. Essential equipment includes a cork bark hiding spot and a shallow water dish.
